Hams Beach

Hams Beach sits at the northern end of the Caves Beach shoreline on the Lake Macquarie coast, reached off Mawson Close with a car park right at the sand. It is one of the few ocean beaches in the area where the council hands dog owners a genuine 24 hour pass, which makes it a reliable early morning and late evening option when the patrolled main beach nearby is off limits to dogs.

Leash status

Lake Macquarie City Council designates Hams Beach as leash free at all times, 24 hours a day. The off leash zone runs about 860 metres north from the Mawson Close access point and car park, so there is a proper stretch of sand to work with rather than a token strip. The southern part of the beach, toward the main patrolled Caves Beach swimming area, is prohibited to dogs, and signage marks where the boundary sits. Keep your dog under effective control wherever you are on the sand, and carry bags, since council rules expect owners to pick up without being reminded.

The terrain is classic ocean beach: firm sand at low tide for a decent run, softer sand above the high tide line, and rock platforms toward the southern headland. The caves that give the suburb its name sit at the Caves Beach end, outside the dog zone, so plan the human side of the walk separately if you want to see them. Parking is straightforward, with the Mawson Close car park a few steps from the access track, and street parking along the approach in busier periods. At high tide the runnable band narrows, so time a longer visit around the tide chart if your dog needs space to stretch.

While you're out there

Caves Beach works well as a half day loop. After the sand, Boffee Cafe is the local coffee stop, and Caves Coastal Bar and Restaurant covers a sit down lunch or dinner.
