Pyramids Road Wines

Pyramids Road Wines is a small family winery on Wyberba Lane, a few minutes from Ballandean and the Girraween National Park turn-off on the Granite Belt. The tasting shed is rustic, the list is cool-climate and hand made on site, and dogs are genuinely part of the visit rather than an afterthought at the gate.

Dogs at the cellar door

Well-behaved dogs on a lead are welcome in the shaded outdoor seating around the tasting shed, which is where tastings happen in fine weather anyway. There is no dog menu or borrowed water bowl, so pack your own water and a bowl in the car. The space is small and personal, and the pour is usually done by Warren or Sue themselves, so a calm dog suits the room best. If you are bringing more than one dog, a quick call ahead is a courteous move.

Max: Tasted the whole flight with my nose on someone's shoe while the humans argued about tannin. Ten out of ten, and the Bernie's Blend came home with us.

Worth knowing

This is a working boutique winery rather than a tourist complex, so the appeal is the conversation as much as the wine. The range leans into the Granite Belt's altitude: chardonnay through to reds like merlot and petit verdot, with Bernie's Blend as the house red named after a family dog. The cellar door opens daily, 10am to 4:30pm, and weekday afternoons are the quiet window if you want the tasting shed to yourselves.

Getting there and parking

The address is 25 Wyberba Lane, just off the New England Highway between Ballandean and the Queensland-NSW line. Parking is on site and roomy, with space for caravans and larger rigs, which matters on this stretch of highway where many visitors are towing.

Pair it with

Girraween National Park sits next door, but dogs are barred from Queensland national park tracks, so treat it as a scenic drive rather than a walk. For more dog-friendly tastings, Bent Road Winery and Distillery and Golden Grove Estate Wines are both short drives through Ballandean, and Balancing Heart Vineyard is just up the road in the same suburb. If the day runs long, Mountview Wines at Glen Aplin combines a cellar door with camping, so neither of you has to drive home.
