Castle Glen Australia

Castle Glen Australia is a castle-themed producer on Amiens Road at The Summit, north of Stanthorpe on the Granite Belt. It makes everything onsite, preservative and chemical free: single malt whiskies, Queensland's first whisky among them, plus liqueurs, fruit wines, fortifieds, ciders and beers, with more than 300 products in the range. For dog owners there is the added bonus of a big open lawn and a cellar door that takes small dogs inside.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome on the large grassy lawn and garden areas around the castle, where there is room to settle beside you through a tasting flight. Small, well-behaved dogs on leads are also generally allowed inside the cellar door itself. Keep the leash on throughout, particularly when other visitors or dogs are around the property.

Max: treat this as a settle-and-stay stop. The lawn is roomy but it is shared space, so the lead stays short near the cellar door entrance.

Worth knowing

Tastings are free and the range is unlike anywhere else on the Granite Belt, running from traditional English-style and creme liqueurs through to novelty flavours such as musk stick and chilli, alongside the whiskies and fruit wines. The castle building itself is worth the photo before you leave. Hours are 10am to 4pm, seven days.

Getting there and parking

The cellar door is at 3184 Amiens Road, The Summit, roughly 10 to 15 minutes north of Stanthorpe, with onsite parking that copes with everything from cars to coaches.

Close by with the dogs

For a Granite Belt circuit, Varias and Ravenscroft Vineyard are both in the nearby Stanthorpe area and pair easily with a Castle Glen stop.
