Mitchell Wines is a family-run cellar door in an 1890s stone building at Penwortham, on the southern approach to the Clare Valley, and leashed dogs are genuinely part of the visit. The dog setup
Dogs on lead are welcome across the outdoor cellar door garden, the deck and the lawns looking over the vines. Water bowls are typically out in the garden, and the cheese platters make it easy to turn a tasting into a long, dog-friendly lunch. Check in at the counter on arrival in case a private function has claimed part of the lawn, and keep the lead on throughout.
Pepsi: Ask for a spot on the vineyard lawn. It is the roomiest part of the garden and the place to flop down between tastings.
The vibe
Mitchell is best known for Riesling, including back vintages most cellar doors no longer pour, alongside intense varietal reds under the Mitchell, Kinsfolk and McNicol labels. The stone cellar and quiet rural grounds make it one of the more atmospheric stops on this stretch, and visitors regularly mention the value. The door is open daily from late morning, so check the current hours when you plan the drive.
Getting there and parking
Penwortham sits roughly 90 minutes north of Adelaide on the way into Clare, with free parking right in front of the building. The Riesling Trail runs through the village, and its 35 kilometres of smooth former-railway corridor welcome dogs on lead, making a leg-stretch walk an easy add before or after tasting. Note that the separate Clare Valley Wine and Wilderness Trail bans dogs, so stick to the Riesling Trail side.

Kilikanoon Wines Cellar Door is in the same village and lets dogs inside as well as out, Tim Adams Wines is a few minutes north, and O'Leary Walker Wines at Leasingham keeps the loop short and dog-friendly.
