What visitors mention
Mitchell Wines is a family-run cellar door in an 1890s stone building at Penwortham in the Clare Valley, and leashed dogs are genuinely welcome in the outdoor garden and deck areas while you taste.
Dog access and setup. Dogs are welcome on lead in the outdoor cellar door garden, on the deck and on the lawn areas overlooking the vineyard. Staff are accommodating and water bowls are typically out in the garden, so you can settle in for a tasting or a glass with a cheese board while your dog rests beside you. Keep dogs on lead throughout, confirm current rules at the counter on arrival.
Known for. Mitchell is best known for its Riesling, including back vintages, alongside intense varietal reds under the Mitchell, Kinsfolk and McNicol labels. The 1890s stone cellar and quiet rural grounds make it one of the more atmospheric stops on this stretch of the Horrocks Highway.
Getting there and parking. The cellar door is at 2419 Horrocks Highway, Penwortham, about 90 minutes north of Adelaide and just south of Sevenhill. Free on-site parking sits right in front of the building.
Nearby with the dogs. The Riesling Trail runs through Penwortham and makes a good leg-stretch before or after tasting. Kilikanoon Wines, also dog-friendly, is a short drive away if you want to make a day of it.
