Youngtown Trail

The Youngtown Trail runs through Youngtown Regional Park, a green corridor between Alma Street and Poplar Parade on Launceston's southern edge. On gravel and dirt through bushland it feels well away from the suburbs, and dogs stay on a lead.

Lead rules

The City of Launceston declares it an on-leash area under its dog management policy. Dogs must also keep at least 10 metres from play spaces, which matters at the Alma Street entrance with its playground.

The walk

Unsealed tracks weave through native grassland and bushland, with good natural shade in parts. Walked out and back it comes to roughly 4.5 km, depending on the route you take.

Before you set off

Bring everything with you. There is no toilet, no dog water point and few bins, so carry water and take your dog's waste home.

Parking is easiest at the Poplar Parade end. The Alma Street end relies on street parking.

Max: The playground at Alma Street means the 10 metre rule applies straight away. Start from Poplar Parade if your dog pulls toward kids.

For an off-lead run afterwards, Coronation Park Fenced Dog Park in South Launceston is close by.

A moderate length and soft ground make this a good sniffing walk for most dogs, and the shade helps on warmer days.
