Wongabel State Forest

Wongabel State Forest, just south of Atherton on the Kennedy Highway, protects a remnant patch of endangered Mabi rainforest. Its tracks are open to dogs on lead, and the canopy keeps them cool.

Lead rules

Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service manages the walking area, and dogs must be on a lead at all times on the tracks. Parts of the wider forest are also worked as commercial plantation.

The walk

Gravel tracks wind beneath towering trees, with plant species labelled along the way. Watch for tree roots and rocks poking through the surface.

Before you go

There are no water taps and no bins, so carry water for you and the dog and take all waste home. Parking is off the Kennedy Highway.

When to go

The dense shade makes this a good summer choice, when the drier, more exposed country around Mareeba gets hot. It suits dogs that enjoy a slow, sniffy forest walk more than a fast workout.
