Ben's Walk

Ben's Walk is a proper bush track above the Shoalhaven River in West Nowra, starting near the Nowra Showground, and dogs are welcome on a lead. Expect rock steps, fern gullies and a suspension bridge with a bit of bounce.

Lead rules

Shoalhaven City Council allows dogs on the walk as long as they stay leashed. On a bush track with steps and sandstone gorges, that is also plain good sense.

The walk

The track is natural ground, with dirt, rock steps and uneven footing. From Hanging Rock you get wide views over the Shoalhaven River to the mountains beyond.

From there it winds past rugged sandstone gorges and fern-filled gullies before crossing the suspension bridge.

Max: Some dogs balk at a bridge that moves under them. Let yours take it slowly, and keep the lead short on the rock steps.

Make a day of it

Down the road in South Nowra, Husky Brewing and Franks Espresso Bar are easy stops on the way home.

When to go

The steps and uneven ground suit fit, sure-footed dogs more than elderly ones. Cooler mornings are best for the climbing, and bring water for the dog.
