Takura Trail Head, Mary2Bay Rail Trail

Takura Trail Head is an access point on the Mary2Bay Rail Trail, a flat multi-use route running through bushland between the Mary River and Hervey Bay. It is an honest, undeveloped trailhead rather than a polished attraction, which suits dog walkers happy to bring their own supplies.

The rules. Dogs must stay on-lead and under control the whole way, since the trail is shared with cyclists and horse riders. Bring bags and take your dog's waste with you.

What's there. The Takura siding area is gravel, open ground with limited signage and no facilities as of the last check. There is no potable water on-site, so carry enough for yourself and your dog, especially given the trail is exposed and summer temperatures here regularly pass 30 degrees. A picnic shelter exists near the Walligan siding section further along the trail.

Getting there. The trailhead sits off Piggford Lane/Churchill Mine Road, reached via Nikenbah-Dundowran Road from Hervey Bay, with the final stretch on local gravel roads.

Weekday mornings are quietest, the trail sees more walkers, runners and cyclists on weekends. Check the Fraser Coast Regional Council or the Mary2Bay Rail Trail community group for closures, since sections have been affected by past flooding and ongoing trail works.
