Stringer's Creek Walk

In the old gold town of Walhalla, paths and old tramway benches follow Stringer's Creek through a narrow, fern-filled gorge scattered with mining relics. Dogs are welcome on a lead, and much of the way is cool and shaded.

Lead rules

Dogs must be on a lead and under control. The township sits in Baw Baw Shire, while Parks Victoria looks after the surrounding Crown land and historic area.

The name is a local one for the creekside paths, which overlap parts of the Walhalla to Poverty Point circuit.

The walk

Underfoot is a mix of dirt, gravel, old tramway formation and some stone steps, so wear sturdy shoes.

The gorge, the bush canopy and the elms and poplars along the creek keep most of it shaded. The creek runs alongside, but carry fresh water for the dog rather than letting it drink from still pools.

Park on the main street or near the Walhalla Goldfields Railway station.

Max: Snakes can be active in the warmer months. Keep the lead on and watch the track edges.

Make a day of it

Walhalla lets leashed dogs join some heritage experiences, including tours of the Long Tunnel Extended Goldmine and rides on the Goldfields Railway. For an off-lead run, try the Rawson Recreation Reserve Off Leash Dog Area in nearby Rawson.

Cool, shady and full of smells, it suits curious dogs on a mild day.
