Union Hill Mine Lookout – Peg Leg Gully loop

The Union Hill Mine Lookout and Peg Leg Gully loop is a goldfields bushwalk of about 7.5 km through the Maldon Historic Reserve, and dogs are welcome on a lead the whole way.

Lead rules

Parks Victoria manages the reserve. Dogs must be on a lead and under control at all times, which protects the wildlife living in the forest.

The walk

The loop follows dirt goldfield paths and old vehicle tracks through Box-Ironbark forest, past open diggings, shafts and mining relics.

Those tracks can turn rutted or boggy after rain, so wear shoes you do not mind muddying. Being a longer loop, it is usually quieter than the short town walks.

Before you set off

There is no reliable water out on the loop, so carry enough for you and the dog. Bins sit closer to town, so pack out your bags.

The canopy gives patchy shade, but the ridge and lookout sections are exposed. Parking is easiest near the Beehive Chimney precinct or off High Street.

Max: Seven and a half kilometres on dirt with no water out there is a proper outing. Carry more than you think, and skip it on a hot afternoon.

Make a day of it

Finish back in town at The Maldon Bakery or with a cold drink at The Kangaroo Hotel.

Go in spring for wildflowers, or on a mild morning. It suits fit dogs that enjoy a long sniff through the bush.
