Mount Tarrangower – Anzac Hill loop

This loop climbs from Maldon via Anzac Hill and Mantons Gully to the top of Mount Tarrangower, where the old poppet head lookout gives 360 degree views over the town and countryside. Dogs can come, on a lead.

Lead rules

The track is in the Maldon Historic Reserve, managed by Parks Victoria. Keep dogs on a lead and under control the whole way, since echidnas and ground-nesting birds live here.

The walk

Expect dirt bush paths and unsealed management tracks, with a steady incline up through Mantons Gully. Gold-mining relics, including old quartz roasting kilns, sit beside the track.

The restored Box-Ironbark forest gives partial shade, but the exposed ridges get hot in summer.

Water and parking

There is no water on the track, so carry a bottle and bowl. Butts Reserve near the base of the mountain has taps.

You can park at the summit, near High Street and the fire station, or at Butts Reserve. Bins are at the summit, so pack out anything from the lower tracks.

Walk back into town for The Maldon Bakery or a seat at the Maldon Hotel.

Spring brings wildflowers and cooler climbing weather. Fit, active dogs will enjoy it most.
