Tumbulgum Heritage Trail

Where the Tweed and Rous Rivers meet, the Tumbulgum Heritage Trail wanders through a small river village past 19th-century buildings and plaques from the steamboat era. Keep the dog on a lead and it is a relaxed, flat stroll with wide water views.

Lead rules

Tweed Shire Council requires dogs on a lead in the village walkways and riverbank reserves. The Tumbulgum Community Association set up the trail.

Stotts Island and Duroby nature reserves nearby do not allow dogs at all, so keep to the village.

The walk

Concrete footpaths, bitumen and grassed reserves make up the route. Mature trees shade parts of the riverside, but some foreshore sections are open.

Bins sit near the main riverbank reserves, the general store and the picnic spots, but dog water bowls are scarce, so bring your own. Parking is easy in the heart of the village, near the community hall and the reserves.

Make a day of it

Finish with a coffee at House of Gabriel in the village. The nearest off-lead areas are a short drive away in Murwillumbah.

The gentle, level going suits older dogs and slow sniffers. The open foreshore stretches make the cooler parts of the day the pick.
