The trail people mean when they ask about a Gippsland rail trail near Sale is the Gippsland Plains Rail Trail. It does not reach Sale itself; the closest points are Maffra and its eastern end at Stratford. Dogs are allowed, on a lead at all times.
Lead rules
The trail's committee of management works with Wellington Shire Council and Latrobe City Council, and the rule is simple. Keep your dog leashed for the whole ride or walk.
The trail
It runs between Traralgon and Stratford, through Glengarry, Toongabbie, Cowwarr, Heyfield, Tinamba and Maffra. The surface is smooth, well-packed fine gravel, comfortable for paws.
The views are wide dairy country with the foothills of the Great Dividing Range behind, plus old railway infrastructure along the way. Bring water for the dog on longer sections.
Where to start
Start at Stratford or Maffra for the nearest trailheads to Sale. On a long stretch in summer, cooler mornings suit dogs best.
