The Shallows Coastal Reserve

Ocean views and a signed off-leash zone make The Shallows Coastal Reserve at Shell Cove a favourite with local dogs. Shellharbour City Council designates the foreshore along Bass Point Tourist Road, from the reserve to the gravel loader, as an off-leash area, but Shellharbour South Beach is excluded.

Off lead, under control

Dogs can run free on the grass and sandy patches but must stay under effective control. Surfers launch from here for the reef break, so keep recall sharp around the access paths.

The walk

Grassy tracks and stretches of crushed black rock gravel follow the rocky foreshore, with rock pools and wide ocean views. Some dogs swim in the sheltered water off the shore.

Parking and facilities

Several free car parks line Bass Point Tourist Road, with bins, picnic tables and gas barbecues nearby. There are beach showers, but bring fresh water and a bowl for the dog.

Shade is limited to a few established trees and shaded benches.

Max: Shellharbour South Beach is not part of the off-leash zone. Check the signs before I hit the sand.

Make a day of it

Head back into Shell Cove for a meal at Georgia Rose or coffee at Leaf Cafe & Co Shell Cove. On the harbour boardwalk, dogs must be on lead and stay out of the water.
