Duck river crossing

Duck River Crossing is a flat, shared path following the Duck River through South Granville, a quiet riparian corridor of native vegetation and birdlife that runs through toward Auburn. It is an easy on-leash walk well away from main roads, which is rare enough in Sydney's inner west to be worth knowing about.

The walk

The path is mostly paved or gravelled and largely flat, running several kilometres along the riverbank and linking through to Auburn; the full out-and-back route is roughly seven kilometres, so most dog walks will be a chosen section rather than the whole thing. This is a walk or light jog, not a hike. The track threads through managed dirt paths and riparian bushland near reserves such as Ray Marshall Reserve, and birdlife along the water gives sniff-happy dogs plenty to process.

Leash status

Treat this as an on-leash path the whole way. Cumberland City Council enforces leash rules on shared paths and its reserves, and requires owners to pick up after their dogs, with bins placed at intervals along the route. Check the signage at your entry point on the day rather than relying on anyone's secondhand account of exact boundaries.

Water and hazards

Some sections have bubblers with a bowl at the base, and there are occasional benches along the bank, but do not count on toilets or consistent shade across the whole route, so carry your own water as backup. The main hazard is the shared-path traffic: the path narrows near the bridge sections, and cyclists come through quickly. If your dog pulls toward bikes or other dogs, keep the leash short through those pinch points. After heavy rain the unpaved sections turn muddy and low-lying parts of the corridor can flood, so check conditions after a storm.

When to go

Weekday mornings are the quietest stretch, with fewer bikes and dogs. Weekends bring more foot traffic and more dogs, which is fine for a social dog and less so for one that finds crowds hard work.

Getting there

Access is via local streets in South Granville and Auburn, with street parking near the entry points. Granville Station is a short walk from the South Granville end if you are coming by train, making this an easy car-free outing.

Close by with the dogs

If your dog wants off-lead time after the walk, the Little Duck Creek Reserve fenced park in Guildford and Handley Street fenced park in Auburn are both close by.
