Freers Beach Foreshore Walk

The Freers Beach foreshore walk follows the white sand of Shearwater along the Rubicon estuary, looking across to Penguin Island and Narawntapu National Park. Dogs walk the path on lead, and Latrobe Council sets timed off-lead sections on parts of the beach.

Leads and the beach

Keep your dog leashed on the foreshore path. Off-lead times and boundaries on Freers Beach are set by Latrobe Council and vary with the season, so check the signs at the beach access before letting go.

Some nearby reserves are on-lead only or closed to dogs, and the signs mark those too.

The walk

Surfaces mix sandy coastal track, gravel and paved footpath. Bins are placed at beach accesses and parking areas, but long stretches get full sun.

Pepsi: There is no dog water on the open path, so a bottle and a collapsible bowl earn their place here.

Make a day of it

Add the short loop at Shearwater Park, then sit down at Rocky Gardens Cafe.

Go early or late on summer days, when the sand and path are cooler.
