Semaphore to Fort Largs Beach Walk

From Semaphore north to Fort Largs, this coastal walk mixes a sealed path with long stretches of beach, passing Fort Glanville on the way. The season decides how you do it, because the beach rules change with daylight saving.

Leads and the beach rules

City of Port Adelaide Enfield requires dogs on lead on the shared paths and footpaths at all times. On the beach between Semaphore South and the North Haven breakwater, dogs can be off-leash under effective control from April to September.

During daylight saving, from October to March, dogs must be on lead on that beach between 10 am and 8 pm. Some spots near the jetties stay on lead all year.

The walk

You can stick to the sealed path and boardwalk or drop down onto the sand. Along the way are Gulf St Vincent views, dunes, and the old coastal defences at Fort Glanville and Fort Largs.

Drinking fountains with dog bowls sit along the foreshore, mostly toward Semaphore, and bins are frequent. The sand and path are exposed, with shade at the reserves near Semaphore South.

Parking is plentiful along Military Road and the Esplanade.

Make a day of it

Ink Espresso @ The Fort in Taperoo is near the northern end, and Roy Marten Fenced Dog Park is close by for an off-lead run.

When to go

Autumn and winter give the most off-lead freedom on the sand. In summer, go before 10 am or after 8 pm if you want the lead off.
