North East Tasmania Rail Trail

The North East Tasmania Rail Trail starts in Scottsdale and follows the old railway line out through farmland and bush. It is a long, gentle gravel trail, and Dorset Council requires dogs on lead at all times.

Lead rules

Dogs must be leashed along the whole trail and must not bother livestock or wildlife. Pick up after your dog.

The walk

The surface is mostly compacted gravel, so it holds up in all weather. From Scottsdale it runs about 26 km one way toward Tulendeena.

An out and back from Scottsdale is the easy way to walk it with a dog. It passes farmland views, bush pockets and old railway relics.

Max: Stock paddocks run right beside the trail. Keep the lead short when sheep or cattle are at the fence.

When to go

Cool, dry days suit it best. Bring water for the dog, since this is open country with long gaps between towns.
