Saltwater Creek Path

Saltwater Creek threads through the northern suburbs of Cairns, and the path beside it gives Cairns North, Edge Hill and Aeroglen a flat, paved walk along the water. Dogs stay on a lead.

Lead rules

Cairns Regional Council requires dogs on a lead along the path unless a section is signed off-leash.

Close by, dogs are banned from Flecker Gardens, the Centenary Lakes conservation areas and the Red, Blue, Yellow and Green Arrow tracks, so do not follow the creek into those.

The walk

Expect sealed concrete and boardwalk sections through reserve land, with mangrove and wetland vegetation and plenty of birdlife. The path joins the city's walking and cycling network, so you can make it as long as you like.

Shade and supplies

Mature trees and palms cover some stretches, but the open canal sections take full sun in the middle of the day. Bins sit at access points and road crossings; water is patchy, so carry a bottle for the dog.

Park on a cross street near Sheridan Street or in one of the small laybys along the network.

Make a day of it

Guyala Cafe and Odett's Cafe are close by for a coffee afterwards.

Walk it early or late, when the exposed sections are bearable. Flat and paved, it suits older dogs and short legs.
