Guyala Cafe

Guyala Cafe sits at the northern end of the Cairns Esplanade, a waterfront brunch spot looking across to the mangroves. It is a natural post-walk stop, and the cafe flags its outdoor seating as dog friendly, which fits the location: this stretch of the Esplanade is where Cairns dog owners congregate.

The dog setup

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating, a covered and open-air area with room to keep a dog settled under the table and clear of staff. Bring a lead you can secure to a chair or table leg, and staff can usually sort a water bowl if you ask. Weekday mornings are the easy window for a table with space.

The vibe

It runs a strong breakfast and brunch menu with healthy options, lemon myrtle touches and Tattooed Sailor coffee, and it consistently rates among the better cafes in Cairns. Eggs benedict, waffle stacks and mushroom toast are the regulars, with vegan options across the menu. Open for breakfast and lunch, roughly 7am to mid-afternoon daily.

Getting there and parking

It is on Smith Street at the corner of the Esplanade. Street parking runs along Smith Street and the Esplanade, though it fills on busy mornings, so early is easier.

Close by with the dogs

The Esplanade walking path is directly across the road for an on-lead stroll, and the council's designated off-leash parkland sits at the northern end of the Esplanade between Smith and Lily Streets, a minute away: on-lead everywhere else along the water, and dogs are banned from the Lagoon precinct. Check the signage before unclipping. For other stops, Lillipad Cafe is south along the water and Espresso Italiano is further north.
