Rose Bay Foreshore

Dogs can run off lead at any hour along the Rose Bay Foreshore, the harbour stretch between Dumaresq Reserve and Percival Park. Add calm, shallow water and seaplanes lifting off the bay, and it is one of the eastern suburbs' favourite dog walks.

Leads and the off-lead area

Woollahra Municipal Council allows dogs off leash all day on this section of foreshore. Outside it, check the signs: neighbouring Rose Bay Park, for one, is on-lead at all times.

The walk

Flat paved footpaths run beside the sand and parkland, with sailing boats and the city skyline in view. The beach is at its widest at low tide, which is when the social crowd turns up.

The water is shallow and waveless, so paddlers and cautious swimmers do well here. There are bins along the foreshore, but little shade on the sand itself, though Percival Park has trees.

Pepsi: The harbour is calm enough for a proper paddle, but bring a bowl of fresh water too. There is not much to drink right on the sand.

Getting started

On-street parking is limited near the end of Caledonian Road. The nearest toilets are in the wider Rose Bay precinct, such as Lyne Park.

Make a day of it

The Rose Bay cafe strip is a short walk away. Try Sugar+Spoon or Jezve Coffee.

Aim for low tide and an early start in summer, when shade is scarce. Water-loving dogs will want to stay all morning.
