Railton-Sheffield Rail Trail

The Railton-Sheffield Rail Trail, also known as the Railton Rattler, links the two Kentish towns. It is part of the Tasmanian Trail, and dogs walk it on lead.

Lead rules

Kentish Council requires dogs on a lead and under effective control on its tracks and multi-use trails. The only off-lead spaces are fenced sections of the Railton and Sheffield Recreation Reserves.

The walk

This is a country trail, not a footpath. Expect soft woodland dirt, gravel and a few short sections on connecting local back roads.

The route passes open farmland, plantation forest and native bushland. It also forms part of the Wild Mersey mountain bike network, so you will share it with riders.

Max: Bikes use the trail and cars use the back-road links. Keep the lead short on both.

When to go

Dry weather keeps the dirt sections firm underfoot. Bring water for the dog, and finish with an off-lead run in the fenced reserve at either town.
