Sherwood River Camp

Sherwood River Camp is a riverfront bush camping ground on a working farm just outside Latrobe, listed through Hipcamp and its own site, and dogs are welcome. It is the rustic end of the scale: flat grassy flats on the Mersey River, campfires allowed with fire pits provided, swimming and walking trails from the tent flap, and nothing else. No toilets, no power. If you and the dog want a genuine off-grid river camp rather than a holiday park, this is the shape of it.

Pets are welcomed but must stay under control at all times, and the reason is on the label: this is a working farm with livestock about. A dog that is reliable around stock is essential, and a lead is the safe default whenever animals are nearby. No pet fee or size limit is published, so confirm conditions with the host at booking. Site cost sits around $10 per person per night, and campers are asked to be fully self-contained, taking all waste and rubbish out with them.

Worth knowing

Being fully self-contained means your own toilet setup and enough drinking water for both of you. The gravel hill driveway is the other planning point: a 4x4 is recommended if you are towing a caravan. What you trade in facilities you get back in quiet, with the Wild Mersey mountain bike trails nearby and the river for the dog.

Getting there and parking

The camp sits about 8 minutes from Latrobe and 15 minutes from Devonport, handy if you are coming or going on the Spirit of Tasmania. Park at your site on the grass.

While you're out there
