Putta Bucca Wetlands

Putta Bucca Wetlands, just north of Mudgee, is a quiet wetland walk beside the Cudgegong River where waterbirds outnumber people. Dogs are welcome on a lead.

Lead rules

Mid-Western Regional Council requires dogs on a lead and under effective control in public spaces unless they are in a designated off-leash park. The wetlands are not one, so keep the lead on.

The walk

The loop runs about 2 kilometres return and takes 45 minutes to an hour. It is fairly flat, on a packed track.

Expect reedbeds, open lakes and a steady cast of waterbirds. New bird hides and mature trees give some shade, though parts of the track cross open ground.

Max: The birds are the main event here. Keep the lead short near the hides and reed edges so your dog doesn't flush them.

Getting started

Free parking is off Putta Bucca Road, and toilets and bins sit by the picnic and barbecue area. Drinking water is limited, so pack a bowl and a bottle.

Lawson Park in Mudgee adds another easy on-lead walk in town.

Cool mornings are kindest in summer, given the open sections. The short, flat loop suits older dogs and calm walkers.
