Panatana Rivulet Footbridge

Panatana Rivulet Footbridge marks an easy 2 km return walk on Port Sorell's northern shore, crossing a wooden pedestrian bridge over the quiet rivulet between Park Esplanade and the Darling and Rice Street side. Flat bushland track and paved footpath make it workable for dogs of most fitness levels, and the lead stays on for all of it.

The walk

The path mixes shoreline scrub with paved sections and benches set along the rivulet for a rest with a view. It is a short, reliable loop rather than a workout, which is exactly what suits a hot afternoon or a dog recovering from a bigger day.

Leash status

Dogs stay on lead throughout the boardwalk and trail sections under Latrobe Council rules, partly because the path narrows near the bridge and partly because the southern shore runs alongside bird sanctuary habitat. The shoreline birdlife is the reason the rule exists, not just the paperwork.

Two exclusion zones sit nearby: dogs are not permitted at Panatana Park, the paddling pool park, or on the beach from the Port Sorell Surf Club through to the boat ramp. Check the current signage before you plan a route that touches either.

Water and hazards

There is no drinking water on the walk, so carry what the dog needs. Public toilets sit near the main foreshore and boat ramp before the bushland section, and bins are limited to the town access points, so pack waste bags out with you.

Getting there and when to go

Free roadside parking sits at the Park Esplanade trailhead, about 25 minutes from Devonport via the B74. Public transport is minimal, so drive. Mid to high tide gives the best views, since low tide exposes mudflats rather than open water, and in summer the gravel and wooden bridge sections heat up, so morning or late afternoon is kinder.
