Panatana Rivulet Footbridge

Panatana Rivulet Footbridge is an easy 2 kilometre return walk on Port Sorell's northern shore, crossing a wooden pedestrian bridge over the quiet rivulet between Park Esplanade and the Darling and Rice Street side. The path mixes bushland track and paved footpath, flat enough for dogs of most fitness levels.

The rules. Dogs must stay on a lead at all times on the boardwalk and trail sections, partly because the path narrows in places and partly to avoid disturbing local birdlife along the shoreline. Dogs are not permitted at Panatana Park (the paddling pool park) or on the beach in front of the Port Sorell Surf Club through to the boat ramp, so plan your route around those exclusion zones.

What's there. Benches are dotted along the rivulet for a rest with a view. Free roadside parking is available at the Park Esplanade trailhead, and public toilets are near the main foreshore and boat ramp before the bushland section starts. Carry your own waste bags, as bins are limited to town access points.

Getting there. From Devonport, it is roughly a 25 minute drive via the B74 (Port Sorell Main Road) to Park Esplanade, where the northern trailhead begins. Public transport options are minimal, so a private vehicle is the practical way in.

Tides and crowds. Walk at mid to high tide for the best views, since low tide exposes mudflats rather than open water. Local dog walkers tend to use the trail in the early morning and late afternoon, but it rarely feels crowded. In summer, the gravel and the exposed wooden footbridge sections can get hot underfoot, so aim for cooler parts of the day.

When to go. A reliable short walk for a mid-tide morning or late afternoon outside summer heat. Good for dogs that are comfortable on a lead across a narrow bridge; confirm current signage for the paddling pool park and surf club exclusion zones before you set out.
