Jordan River Trail

The Jordan River Trail links Brighton and Pontville along an easy, flat gravel and concrete path beside the river, popular with local dog walkers for its rural scenery and birdlife. The main out-and-back stretch runs about 4.5 kilometres, with a longer 9 kilometre loop for dogs that want more distance.

The walk. Flat, well-formed gravel and concrete surface most of the way, easy enough for prams and less mobile walkers as well as dogs of any fitness level. Access points are off Andrew Street, Ford Road, or near the Pontville Bridge on the Midland Highway.

Leash status. Dogs need to stay on lead along the Jordan River walk. The trail is also used by horse riders in places, so keeping dogs close and under control matters more than usual here.

Water. The trail runs beside the Jordan River itself, so there are informal spots for a paddle, though there is no dedicated dog water point. Bring your own water bowl for the walk, especially in warmer months.

Hazards. Sections run close to the road, so watch dogs near traffic. The trail can flood after heavy rain, so check conditions if there has been recent wet weather before heading out.

Getting there. About 25-30 minutes north of Hobart via the Midland Highway. Free car parking is available off Andrew Street and near the Ford Road crossing, and there are public toilets on the other side of Brighton Road near the trackhead.

Weekend mornings bring out walkers, runners, and other dogs, so go on a weekday morning or mid-afternoon for a quieter run. A solid pick for dogs that are happy with a flat, sociable walk rather than rugged bush.
