Point Lowly Lighthouse Walk

The short walk to the old stone lighthouse at Point Lowly gives wide views over the upper Spencer Gulf and red-cliff headlands, out on the coast from Whyalla. For dog owners the draw is simple: this is one of the stretches of coast where Whyalla lets dogs off lead.

Off-lead, under control

Whyalla City Council allows dogs off-leash under effective control at any time on the Point Lowly and Stony Point beaches and coastal areas. Keep yours close enough to call back around other visitors near the lighthouse and campground.

The walk

Expect formed gravel, rocky coastal track and short sections of road near the lighthouse precinct. Watch soft paws on the rockier parts.

For something longer, the Freycinet Trail runs about 12 kilometres one way along the flat coast from Point Lowly.

Water and shade

There is almost no shade out here, only low scrub and open sky. Water and bins are back at the Point Lowly Campground, so pack plenty for the dog.

Parking near the lighthouse is ample, with room for cars, caravans and RVs.

Max: No shade on this coast at all. Skip the middle of a hot day and carry more water than you think you need.

Make a day of it

Back in town, Eyre Pantry and Blended Cafe are handy for coffee after the drive.

Go early or late in the day, and outside peak holidays if you want the coast mostly to yourselves.
