One Tree Hill Walk

One Tree Hill gives Bendigo dog owners a real bushwalk on the edge of town, through box-ironbark forest to a lookout tower on the summit. It is part of Greater Bendigo National Park, and dogs are allowed only on lead.

Lead rules

Parks Victoria permits dogs in the One Tree Hill block on designated roads and tracks only, and they must stay on a lead at all times. Dogs are not allowed elsewhere in the national park, so stick to the marked tracks.

The walk

Tracks are natural earth, gravel and fire trail over undulating ground, with some rocky ridge sections. Along the way are old mining relics, seasonal wildflowers and plenty of birdlife.

Several tracks meet here, including the Lookout Loop, so you can keep it short or build a longer fitness walk.

Before you go

There is no drinking water and there are no bins, so carry water for both of you and take all waste home. Parking is off Edwards Road in Flora Hill or at the bottom of One Tree Hill Road in Spring Gully.

Max: The canopy helps, but the rocky ridges heat up fast. On warm days go early and turn back before the dog tires.

Make a day of it

Head back into town for a meal at the Lake View Hotel or a coffee at Percy and Percy.

The cooler months suit it best. The hills make it a better match for fit dogs than for older ones.
