Balyang Sanctuary

Balyang Sanctuary sits on the Barwon River at Marnock Road in Newtown, Geelong, and it is a lead-on walk from start to finish. The City of Greater Geelong keeps dogs on a lead throughout the sanctuary to protect the waterbirds that make the place worth visiting.

The walk

Flat, sealed concrete paths loop past shallow wetlands, grassy riverbanks and tall gums. Pelicans, swans and cormorants work the water, so expect a dog with its nose up the whole way round.

The paths are part of the wider Barwon River Trail, which makes it easy to stretch a short loop into a longer riverside walk. They are shared with runners and cyclists, and wide enough for everyone to pass.

What's on site

There are public toilets, plus picnic tables and seating along the river, some with barbecues. Bring water and a bowl for the dog.

Max: The birds here are the whole point. Keep the lead short near the water's edge and let them be.

Make a day of it

Keep going along the Barwon River path, or finish with a coffee at 63 Degrees Highton.

When to go

The sealed surface means no mud after rain, so it works as a wet-weather walk too. It suits older dogs and anyone after an easy, flat outing.
