Nelly Bay Foreshore Walk

Magnetic Island has no off-leash dog parks, which makes the Nelly Bay foreshore one of the main places to walk a dog. The route follows the coast from Nelly Bay toward the old helipad and on toward Picnic Bay, with dogs on lead.

Lead rules

Townsville City Council requires dogs to be on lead on the public foreshore walkways and on the beaches where dogs are allowed. The council has turned down a proposal for an off-leash park on the island.

Dogs are not allowed in Magnetic Island National Park, so check the signs before following any track beyond the foreshore.

The walk

Surfaces change as you go, from concrete footpath links to sandy foreshore tracks and sealed sections. The views stretch across Cleveland Bay toward Rocky Bay, past coastal scrub and beachfront.

Mature coastal trees give shade in places, but some stretches are fully exposed.

Water and parking

Drinking water is sparse along the coast, so carry enough for the dog. Bins sit near the main access points around Sooning Street and the ferry terminal, where parking is also easiest.

Make a day of it

The walk starts close to the Nelly Bay shops. Tropical Tide and Island Spice Cafe are handy for a stop afterwards.

When to go

Early morning is best in the tropical heat, given the exposed sections. It suits anyone arriving on the ferry who wants an easy first walk.
