Cstay Guest House on Magnetic Island

Cstay Guest House is a budget guest house at 32 Picnic Street in Picnic Bay, around 200 metres from the historic Picnic Bay jetty and the beach. It runs affordable air-conditioned twin and double rooms with a shared kitchen, pool deck, barbecue area and courtyard, and some directories list it as pet friendly. The catch: the main booking platforms say guest pets are not permitted, so read the section below before you plan a stay around your dog.

Dogs at the guest house

The pet information for this place is genuinely contradictory. Some directory summaries describe Cstay as dog-friendly and say pets can stay with prior approval, but the Booking.com listing states pets are strictly not allowed in the rooms or on the property, and the guest house's own website makes no mention of pets at all. Guests do regularly mention a resident dog on the grounds, which is not the same as a pet-friendly room. Our read: treat Cstay as a place where you must confirm the current policy by phone on (07) 4758 1616 before booking, and have a fallback in Nelly Bay or Horseshoe Bay if the answer is no.

Max: when one big platform says no pets and the guest house site says nothing, that is a phone call, not a booking button.

The place and the price

Rooms are serviced twin and double rooms with air-conditioning, a hand basin and a bar fridge, from $30 per person per night twin share, with newly renovated shared facilities including a full guest kitchen, a saltwater pool and deck area, barbecue, lounge and free parking. Reviews describe a clean, friendly, hostel-style setup rather than a polished hotel, and the location is the draw: the jetty, the stinger-net swimming enclosure and the Picnic Bay Tavern are all within a couple of minutes' walk.

Out and about with the dog

If your dog does come to the island, the practical rules are set by Townsville City Council: dogs are on leash in public places including the beaches, and Magnetic Island's national park land is closed to dogs altogether, which rules out the Forts walk and most of the island's famous tracks. Plan your exercise around the Picnic Bay foreshore and streets instead. The Dog Shed Water Hole is the local spot that keeps coming up with Picnic Bay dog owners, and the Amaroo at the Brewery along the waterfront is an easy outdoor dining stop.
