The Dog Shed Water Hole, also known as Cockle Falls, is a freshwater rock pool and small seasonal waterfall in the bushland off West Point Road, in Picnic Bay on Magnetic Island. It is not a beach but an inland swimming hole, and the appeal is the quiet: a cool, shaded pool in dense scrub where you rarely meet a crowd, set well back from the island's busy coast.
The rules. This is not a declared off-leash area. Townsville City Council has no designated off-leash zones on Magnetic Island, so keep your dog on a physical lead at all times, in and around the pool. The bushland borders Magnetic Island National Park, where domestic dogs are banned outright, so stay on the main roadside track and do not stray over the boundary. Carry out everything you bring in to keep the pool clean.

What's there. Nothing. The pool is an entirely natural, unserviced bush spot with no toilets, bins or taps. Come self-sufficient: bring drinking water and a bowl for your dog, waste bags, and sun protection for the walk in.
Getting there. The track is off West Point Road, roughly 2.5km west of the Picnic Bay hub, with a short, flat but uneven walk in through the scrub from the roadside. You need your own vehicle, brought across on the Magnetic Island vehicle ferry, since dogs are not allowed on the island's public buses.
When to go. The pool depends entirely on rain. Go in the days after solid wet-season rainfall, when the water is up and the falls are running; through the dry it can shrink to a shallow puddle or disappear, so check recent conditions before you make the trip. Early morning beats the midday heat.
