Neagles Rock Lookout Short Walk

Red rock outcrops and a lookout over the Clare Valley are the reward on the Neagles Rock Lookout Short Walk, a loop of about 1 kilometre just outside Clare. Dogs are allowed on a lead.

Leads and etiquette

Keep your dog leashed for the whole loop, which sits in the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council area. The official trail guide asks walkers to pick up after their dog, and bins on the loop are scarce, so carry the bag back out.

The walk

The loop follows natural, uneven ground over grassy hillsides, past rocky outcrops and a rare remnant of peppermint box woodland. Allow roughly 35 to 45 minutes.

Native trees give patches of shade, but the rocky lookout points heat up quickly in summer.

Getting started

The trailhead and a basic car park are off Neagles Rock Road. There are no toilets or taps on the trail, so bring water and a bowl for the dog.

Max: Rock holds the heat. On a warm afternoon, test the lookout surface with your hand before your dog stands on it.

When to go

Cooler months and early mornings suit it best. The short distance and rough footing make it a good outing for a steady dog comfortable on uneven ground.
