Totness Recreation Park Walk

Totness Recreation Park sits on the edge of Mount Barker, in the Totness and Paechtown area, and its northern section is where dogs can walk. Leads stay on at all times, and the reward is quiet stringybark and blue gum woodland around a historic dam built in 1884.

Lead rules

National Parks and Wildlife Service SA allows dogs on a lead no longer than 2 metres, on designated trails only. Dogs are permitted in the northern section of the park.

The walk

Tracks are natural earth and dirt, plus vehicle fire tracks, and they can be uneven or muddy. Remnant stringybark, blue gum and manna gum woodland gives natural shade.

The dam and its still water are the centrepiece of the northern section.

Max: Wet fire tracks get slippery. Keep the lead short near the dam and wipe paws before the car.

Before you go

There are no drinking water taps or bins in the park. Carry enough water for you and the dog, and take your bags home.

Parking is informal, mostly roadside around the edges of the park.

Make a day of it

Mount Barker's cafes are close. Funk Coffee+Food and Rival Brothers Mount Barker are handy for a coffee afterwards.

Dry days make the tracks easier going. It suits calm dogs that enjoy a quiet bush walk rather than a run.
