Mooroopna Recreation Reserve

Mooroopna Recreation Reserve is the town's big sporting ground off McLennan Street, and its ovals and old harness track make a handy loop for a lead walk. Greater Shepparton City Council requires dogs on lead at all times here.

Lead rules

This is not a designated off-leash area. The council's draft master plan for the reserve has floated an enclosed off-leash space inside the harness track, but until something is built, the lead stays on.

The walk

There is no single marked route. Most people circle the grounds, using sealed connecting paths, open grass and the gravel and earth tracks around the harness track and sports ovals.

Along the way you pass ovals, netball courts, lawn bowls greens and ageing club pavilions, with mature native trees scattered through the open space.

Water and shade

There are no dog water fountains on the walk, so carry a bottle and bowl. Bins turn up near some of the oval boundaries, but bring your own bags.

Shade is patchy. The open edges of the ovals take the full sun, with only the odd stand of trees for relief.

When to go

Free parking right beside the grounds makes this an easy early morning or evening lap. It suits a dog that walks calmly on lead, and cooler days are best given how exposed it is.
