Mona Vale Beach to Basin Beach Coastal Walk

This coastal walk crosses Mona Vale Headland between Mona Vale Beach and Basin Beach, with big Pacific views from the sandstone cliffs. Dogs can come, but the rules change along the way, so know them before you set off.

Lead rules

Northern Beaches Council requires dogs on a lead on the access paths and anywhere not signed otherwise. There is a designated off-lead area beside the southern Mona Vale Headland Reserve.

A trial off-lead zone covers the southern end of Mona Vale Beach in the early morning and evening only. Dogs are not allowed on the other sections of the beach, so check the signs before stepping onto any sand.

The walk

The route mixes grassy strips, suburban streets such as Grandview Parade and Hillcrest Avenue, and bush tracks with stone and concrete steps. It passes through Robert Dunn Reserve as well as the headland.

The steps suit fit dogs more than those with sore joints. Bring water for the dog.

Max: The beach trial only runs at set hours. Read the sign at the southern end before you unclip.

When to go

Early morning works best, when the beach trial is running and the headland is quiet. It suits energetic dogs who handle stairs well.
