Mill Dam Reserve Walk

The Mill Dam Reserve Walk follows the riverbank in Longford on a flat gravel path, passing under the historic railway and highway bridges. Dogs stay on lead along the walkway, with a fenced off-lead area near the boat ramp on Union Street.

Lead rules

Northern Midlands Council requires dogs to be leashed on the main walkway and across the reserve. The fenced exercise area by the boat ramp is the place to let them off.

The walk

The gravel is well kept and level the whole way, so this is an easy stroll rather than a workout. Ducks and other waterbirds gather near the banks, and mature trees and the bridges give some cover between open stretches.

Birds, bins and bubblers by the river

Max: Ducks sit right beside the path in places, so keep the lead short through those stretches.

Bins are at the entry points and along connecting paths. The most reliable bubbler is in town at Victoria Square Park, so pack a bottle for the dog.

Park near the reserve entrances, at the boat ramp or on nearby side streets.

Level gravel makes this a comfortable walk for senior dogs and slow walkers. Dogs that love to watch birds will be busy the whole way.
