Merthyr Park

Merthyr Park is a regenerating bushland reserve on Tip Road in Lilydale, where gravel and boardwalk tracks lead down to the banks of the Second River. Dogs are welcome on lead.

Lead rules

The City of Launceston lists Merthyr Park as an on-lead area under its dog management rules, so keep the lead on for the whole walk.

The walk

Two mapped loops, a small circuit track and a large circuit track, wind through native bush. Surfaces change between gravel, boardwalk and dirt.

Mature eucalypts shade most of the way. The Lilydale Landcare Association has been restoring the native plants along the tracks.

Water and bins

The Second River gives dogs a place to drink and cool off. Bins and taps are few, if any, so bring water for yourself and take your bags home.

Pepsi: The river is the best bit of this walk. Let your dog have a paddle on lead before you head back.

When to go

A free small car park sits at the entrance on Tip Road. The shade makes it a good warm-day walk, and it stays quiet, which suits dogs that are nervous around crowds.
