Island Pool Walk Trail

A 2-kilometre loop in Lane Poole Reserve near Dwellingup, the Island Pool Walk Trail drops through jarrah forest and grass trees to the edge of the Murray River. Dogs are allowed on lead at all times, and the 1080 baiting in the reserve makes that rule non-negotiable.

Leads and baiting

The reserve is managed by the Parks and Wildlife Service within the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions. Dogs must be on a lead and under control the whole way.

The department lays 1080 poison baits for foxes and feral cats in and around Lane Poole Reserve, and 1080 is lethal to dogs. Keep yours on the formed path and stop any scavenging in the bush.

Max: Short lead, eyes on the ground. One bait picked up beside the track is enough to kill a dog.

The walk

It is a moderate loop with short steep hills, rock steps, granite outcrops and uneven ground. Heavy canopy shades most of it, and the views over the Murray valley are the payoff.

The river at Island Pool can carry bacteria or blue-green algae depending on the season, so bring drinking water rather than relying on it.

Getting started

The trail starts at the Island Pool top car park on River Road, which has toilets and a picnic area. Dog bins are scarce in the reserve, so carry waste out.

Make a day of it

Back in town, Rubie's Place Dwellingup is an easy stop on the way home.

It suits fit dogs comfortable with steps, and the shade makes it one of the better choices around Dwellingup on a warm day.
