What visitors mention
The Middleton to Goolwa stretch of the Encounter Bikeway is a shared-use coastal path running roughly 5 to 6 kilometres one-way, mixing paved sections, gravel and short on-road stretches through residential streets, with sea views and dunes for most of the way.
The walk. It is a return or one-way walk depending on how you set up transport, flat and easy underfoot, and shared with cyclists, so keep dogs close on the narrower paved sections.
The rules. Dogs must be under effective control at all times. Seasonal leash rules apply around Goolwa Beach and Middleton (Mill Terrace to The Esplanade): on-leash at all times from 1 December to 31 January, and on-leash between 10am and 6pm from 1 February to 30 April. Watch for signage marking active Hooded Plover nesting zones between Treleaven Place and Tongan Way, where dogs need to be kept well clear.
Water and amenities. Public toilets and dog waste bins are at the major access points, and there are some water stations along the route, but carry water for your dog regardless, especially in summer heat and wind off the coast.

Getting there. From Goolwa, take Port Elliot Road (B37) to Goolwa Beach Road and park at the Goolwa Beach car park. From Middleton, take Goolwa Road to The Esplanade for beachside parking. Both ends have free parking.
Weekday mornings or early starts on weekends are quietest before the mid-morning to early-afternoon crowds arrive. If you're walking the sand sections rather than the path, check tide times first, since a high tide narrows the gap between dunes and water considerably, and expect wind off the coast most days.
