Hector's Modern Australian Kitchen

Hector's Modern Australian Kitchen sits on the historic Goolwa Wharf at the end of Cutting Road, looking out over the Murray and towards Hindmarsh Island. It is a long-running Goolwa institution for breakfast, coffee and a wharf-side lunch, and the river setting makes the outdoor tables the ones to ask for when the dog is along.

Dogs are welcome in the outdoor seating, and staff will generally settle you in the outdoor section with the dog at your feet. Check in on arrival so they can seat you in the right zone. The tables look over the wharf, so a settled dog has boats, pelicans and foot traffic to watch. Water is usually easy to come by in the outdoor area, but a collapsible bowl takes the guesswork out on busy days.

The menu is modern Australian with a seafood lean: seafood chowder, battered flathead with chips, prawn pasta and spring rolls all feature, with brunch through to afternoon service, Tuesday to Sunday from 9am. The room trades on its river views and boat-watching, drawing a steady local and weekend visitor crowd.

The address is 1 Cutting Road in the wharf precinct. Drive to the end of Cutting Road and the venue is hard to miss by the water, with free on-site parking. The wharf precinct also hosts the Cockle Train and the River Murray barge heritage, so it doubles as a stroll if you have a dog in tow.

The wharf walk along the river towards the Goolwa Barrages is an easy on-lead stretch after lunch. For sand and water, the Goolwa Beach off-leash area is a short drive east, though check signage in summer, with leash rules tightened near the Hooded Plover breeding zones. Bombora on the River on Barrage Road is the other riverfront deck that takes dogs, and Cafe 52 Fourteen covers the coffee-and-breakfast end of town.
