Goolwa Beach Off-Leash Area

Goolwa Beach's off-leash areas sit at the mouth of the Murray on the Fleurieu Peninsula, a wide, exposed stretch of sand under Alexandrina Council rules. The main zone runs from the western pedestrian access near the surf club west towards the Murray Mouth, with a second designated stretch between Treleaven Place at Goolwa Beach and Tongan Way at Middleton, good for a proper run when the tide is out.

Leash status

Seasonal rules decide how much freedom your dog gets. From 1 December to 31 January, dogs must be on-leash at all times. From 1 February to 30 April, they go on-leash between 10am and 6pm. From 1 May to 30 November, the beach runs off-leash under effective control, meaning in sight and returning on command. The same effective-control standard applies in the Treleaven Place to Tongan Way zone. Steer clear of marked Hooded Plover breeding areas on the dunes and sand, where restrictions apply regardless of the season, keep 5 metres from playground equipment, and stay out of marked wetlands such as the Kessell Road Wetlands. Bring bags and carry the waste out.

Max: check the calendar before you go in summer. The on-leash window from December through January catches a lot of visitors out who remember this as an off-leash beach the rest of the year.

Water and terrain

This is an open, surf-exposed beach rather than a calm bay, so it suits strong swimmers more than tentative paddlers, and the Goolwa Surf Life Saving Club patrols during peak times. Low tide leaves a broad, firm run for fetch; high tide narrows the sand against the dunes, so plan around the tide if your dog needs room. Bring your own water, as there is no reliable dog-safe tap on the sand.

Getting there and parking

A large free public car park sits at the end of Beach Road, with boardwalks leading onto the sand and public toilets near the main car park. From Adelaide, take the Southern Expressway to Victor Harbor Road, follow the signs to Goolwa, then run Beach Road out to the end. Adelaide Metro regional buses reach Goolwa if you would rather not drive.

When to go

Between May and November you get the full off-leash experience, and early morning is the quietest window year-round. In the February to April shoulder period, mornings and evenings are when the leash can come off. Summer days are busiest and most restricted, so an early start is the way to work with the December to January on-leash rule.

Kuti Shack at the Main Beach car park has dog-friendly outdoor seating for a post-walk feed, and Bombora on the River by the wharf is another outdoor option.
