Fullerton Cove Shared Path

The shared path through Fern Bay and Fullerton Cove follows the Nelson Bay Road corridor, a sealed route with wetland and river views. It works well as an everyday on-lead walk.

Lead rules

Port Stephens Council requires dogs to stay on a lead on its shared paths and on any foreshore land that is not a designated off-lead area.

Dogs must also keep 10 metres clear of children's playgrounds and barbecues.

The walk

The surface is asphalt and concrete, even and reliable for a brisk walk. Views open across wetlands and coastal scrub toward the Hunter River, with stretches of roadside bush.

It links the growing streets of Fern Bay and Fullerton Cove, so it fits easily into a short outing.

Bring your own

There is little on the path itself, so carry water, a bowl and bags. Bins and parking gather at access points and nearby reserves rather than along the route.

Shade comes and goes, with open clearings between pockets of coastal vegetation.

For off-lead play, the Fern Bay Fenced Off-Leash Dog Park is close by.

When to go

With so many exposed stretches, cooler mornings and evenings are best in summer. The smooth surface suits older dogs.
