Pet policy
Dogs must be on a lead no longer than two metres on the bikeway and foreshores unless in a signed off-leash area (City of Victor Harbor).
The Encounter Bikeway runs about 30 kilometres along the Fleurieu coast between Victor Harbor and Goolwa, passing through McCracken. It is flat, paved and firmly on-lead.
Leads on the bikeway
The City of Victor Harbor and Alexandrina Council share the route. Dogs must be on a lead no longer than two metres on shared paths, roadsides and foreshores, unless you are in a signed off-leash area.
The walk
Most of it is a sealed shared path, with a few quiet on-road links. Views take in the ocean, sandy beaches and coastal wetlands full of birds.
The smooth surface is gentle on older joints and free of prickles. Cyclists use it too, so keep your dog on your side of the path.
Max: This path is narrow and fast bikes come up behind you. Keep the lead short and your dog tucked in.
Water and shade
Some coastal parks and rest stops have fountains with dog bowls, but they are sparse around McCracken. Shade is scarce, so avoid the middle of warm days.
