Elizabeth Quay via Point Fraser

This 5.1 km riverside walk follows the Swan River foreshore from Point Fraser east of the city to Elizabeth Quay, and the one fact to know before you go is that dogs stay on lead the entire way, no exceptions along this paved stretch.

The walk. Flat and fully paved, with boardwalk sections through the rehabilitated wetlands at Point Fraser before the path opens onto skyline views heading toward Elizabeth Quay. Moderate grade, no real climbs, and it takes 1 to 1.5 hours at an easy pace. Cyclists share the path, so keep your dog to the pedestrian side.

The rules. The City of Perth manages most of the route, with DevelopmentWA covering the Elizabeth Quay precinct. Dogs must be leashed at all times. Clean up immediately, there are bins and some doggie bag dispensers along the way. Keep dogs at least 5 metres from playgrounds, including the one at Point Fraser, and away from the bird habitat in the wetlands themselves.

Water. A few fountains along the foreshore have pet-friendly bowls, but they are not frequent. Carry your own, especially on a hot day.

Hazards. This route is exposed, with almost no shade between Point Fraser and the Causeway. The afternoon sea breeze, known locally as the Fremantle Doctor, can turn the open promenade genuinely windy. Sun protection and water for your dog are worth packing rather than assuming you will find shade.

Getting there. Elizabeth Quay train station sits right at the western end, so one option is training in and walking back to Point Fraser. Paid parking is available at CPP Point Fraser, 310 Riverside Drive, with the first hour often free. CAT bus stops on Adelaide Terrace are a five minute walk from the river if you are coming from the city side.

Nearby with the dogs. For off-lead time before or after the walk, both Ozone Reserve Fenced Dog Park and Victory Terrace Fenced Dog Park are close by in East Perth. If you are staying over, Quest East Perth is a pet-friendly option near Point Fraser.

When to go. Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge both the sun and the wind. Good for big runners who want distance without hills, though nervous walkers may prefer a calmer day than a windy one.
