Don River Railway Walk

The tracks around the Don River Railway follow the river through bushland at Don, on the edge of Devonport. Heritage trains are the backdrop, and deep shade makes it one of the cooler walks in the area.

On lead the whole way

Devonport City Council requires dogs to be on a lead and under effective control in council reserves such as the Don Reserve.

The walk

The tracks mix paved sections with gravel and unpaved paths, and there are no hard climbs. You walk through native bush beside the winding Don River and past historic railway gear.

Linked loops, including the one via the Sawdust Bridge, let you shorten or stretch the walk to suit your dog.

Water and parking

The river runs close along parts of the track, but carry water for the dog, since taps are mostly back at the off-leash dog park in Devonport. Bins are near the railway station and car parks.

Park at the railway station grounds or at Riverbend Drive by the Sawdust Bridge.

Pepsi: The railway is known for welcoming calm dogs on a lead, so ask at the station if you fancy a short ride together.
