Three Lost Children Walk

The Three Lost Children Walk is a 6.1 kilometre loop through Wombat State Forest and Hepburn Regional Park, starting and finishing at Jubilee Lake in Daylesford, VIC. It is moderate going and takes most walkers 1.5 to 2 hours with a dog on lead. The name comes from an 1867 story of three boys who went missing in this forest, and the track passes goldfield relics and a memorial "message tree" along the way.

The walk. This is the Jubilee Lake loop variant, not the longer 15-16 kilometre linear route that runs between Daylesford and Sailors Falls. Expect forest track underfoot, some gentle climbs, and a few unmarked side paths from old mining days that are easy to wander onto by mistake.

The rules. Forest Fire Management Victoria (DEECA) manages this land within Hepburn Regional Park and Wombat State Forest, and dogs must stay on lead at all times. Keep your dog close on the narrower sections, the forest supports native wildlife and control matters here, not just as a courtesy.

Water. There is limited water on the track itself, particularly in summer. Bring at least 2 litres for yourself and extra for your dog, there is nowhere reliable to refill once you leave the car park.

Hazards. Summer heat in this part of Victoria can push past 40 degrees, which is dangerous for dogs on an exposed forest track with little shade relief in places. Save this walk for a cooler morning or afternoon in the warmer months.

Getting there. Parking and toilets are available at Jubilee Lake, which is the easiest and most obvious start point for this loop.

Nearby with the dogs. If you want more distance, the Tipperary Spring via Blowhole Circuit connects into the same network. Afterwards, The Farmers Arms has a pet-friendly beer garden for a well-earned rest, and Jubilee Lake Holiday Park & Cafe makes a handy base if you are staying overnight.

When to go. Cooler months or early mornings in summer are best, given the heat risk and patchy signage. Good for owners who don't mind a map check beforehand and dogs comfortable walking on lead for a couple of hours.
