Melros Beach Walk

Melros Beach is a quiet stretch of sand and exposed reef on the Dawesville coast, a short drive south of central Mandurah, and a favourite dog walk at low tide when the reef flats open up for exploring. The route follows the beach itself rather than a formal track, so the length of the walk is set by how far along the sand you feel like wandering.

Leash status

Dogs can run off-leash on the sections of Melros Beach signposted as exercise areas, but anywhere without that signage means leads on. City of Mandurah rules default to on-lead on a maximum 2 metre leash in all unsigned public spaces, so check the signs at your entry point before unclipping. Keep a lead handy for busier stretches and be aware of seasonal restrictions near sensitive nesting zones along the coast.

Max: check the tide before you go. Low tide opens the reef for a good sniff around, but the rocks are sharp underfoot, so watch your dog's pace on that section.

Water and terrain

It is a beach walk, so the ocean handles the water side, though not every dog drinks seawater sensibly, so carry fresh water. Underfoot is flat, easy sand with rocky reef sections exposed as the tide drops; those rocks can be tough on paws, and the reef should be treated as a nose-down exploring zone rather than a running zone.

Getting there and parking

Access is off Oceanic Drive in Dawesville, with a car park near the main beach access path. Facilities are minimal: no public toilet or shower on-site, and no poo bag dispensers, so bring your own supply. Bring water and whatever else you need, because there is nothing to buy at the beach itself.

When to go

Early morning and late afternoon are the best windows: cooler, quieter and, if you time it right, a lower tide that puts the reef flats at their most interesting. Summer middays leave the sand hot and the reef exposed sections slippery, so shift the walk to the edges of the day through the warmer months.

Close by with the dogs

For a fenced run on the way home, the Mandurah Fenced Dog Park in Dudley Park is the closest secure option. Seven Trees Coffee in Falcon and Caffeine Kings in Miami both cover the post-walk coffee within a short drive.
