La Gerche walking trail

La Gerche walking trail is a 3.5 kilometre loop through tall pine and eucalypt forest in Creswick Regional Park, about 15 to 20 minutes north of Ballarat. It traces the reforestation work of John La Gerche, Victoria's first state forester, and delivers an easy on-lead walk with fern gullies, heritage information boards and a genuinely quiet forest feel.

The walk

Allow 1 to 1.5 hours for the full loop at a relaxed pace. The track mixes natural forest floor with plantation paths, passing a wooden carving of La Gerche himself and a series of signs explaining how this forest was replanted by hand in the late 1800s. The grade is gentle and the circuit is shaded most of the way, which makes it a solid summer option when open paddock walks are baking.

Leash status

Dogs are welcome but must be on-lead for the entire loop. This is a conservation area with native wildlife, and Parks Victoria asks walkers to stick to the marked paths and stairways to limit erosion. Keep the lead short on the steeper sections and around the gullies.

Water and terrain

There is no water on the trail, so bring your own for both ends of the leash. The surface is natural forest track with plenty of exposed tree roots, and pine needles and cones underfoot. After rain the whole area turns muddy and the roots get slick, so proper footwear matters and dogs checking every scent can catch a paw on the roots.

Hazards

Roots and slippery clay after rain are the main trip hazards. There are no bins on the trail, so carry waste bags out with you. In the wider Creswick Regional Park there are historic mining shafts off-track, one more reason to keep to the marked route with your dog.

Max: three kilometres of new smells per step, and the human only fell over once.

Getting there and parking

The trailhead car park is on Sawpit Gully Road, Creswick, with a small gravel area holding roughly 10 to 12 cars. From Ballarat it is 15 to 20 minutes via the Midland Highway; from Melbourne count on 90 to 100 minutes via the Western Freeway. There is no direct public transport to the trailhead; V/Line runs to Ballarat with a regional bus connection into Creswick. Trailhead signage covers the forest's history and a few benches dot the route.

When to go

Weekday mornings are quietest and the small car park is easiest to fill a spot in early. Weekends draw more walkers, and autumn is the pick for colour among the deciduous plantings. Give the trail a day to drain after heavy rain or come prepared for mud.
