Slaty Creek Campground 1

Slaty Creek Campground 1 is a free, unpowered bush camp in Creswick Regional Park, about ten minutes from Creswick township in the Victorian goldfields. Dogs are welcome on lead throughout the camping area and the wider park, and with no pet fee, no bookings and three sites to choose from, Camp 1 is the easiest of them for a dog-friendly stay.

Dogs are permitted across the campground on a lead at all times; this is a Parks Victoria regional park, not an off-lead run. Pack out all dog waste, as there are no bins anywhere on site. The leash rule matters here for reasons beyond etiquette: the old gold-rush mine shafts scattered through the bush are uncapped, and a dog ranging off the formed tracks is exploring genuinely dangerous ground.

The camp

Camp 1 is the largest and flattest of the three Slaty Creek areas, suiting tents, camper trailers and caravans, with the most parking for bigger rigs. Facilities are basic: drop toilets, picnic tables, a gazebo and wood-fire pits, with firewood BYO. A shallow, seasonal creek runs past, and gold panning in it is part of the local tradition. There is no drinking water on site, so carry enough for both of you, and boil any creek water for at least ten minutes if you plan to use it. Camping is free and first-come, first-served, so arrive early on long weekends.

Max: keep me on the formed tracks, seriously. The mine shafts are real and the bush hides them well. My sniffing privileges ended the moment my humans read the Parks Victoria signs.

Getting there

The campground is reached via Slaty Creek Road off the Creswick-Newlyn area, about 20 minutes from Ballarat and under two hours from Melbourne. The gravel access tracks are generally fine for 2WDs in dry weather, though some sections narrow further into the park, and they turn muddy after rain.

Worth knowing

Cooler months make the most comfortable creek-side camping and leave the tracks firmer. Kookaburras provide the dawn chorus, and the park's on-lead walking trails start right from camp; the La Gerche Walking Trail is nearby for a longer outing. In Creswick township, Il Bello Caffe covers the morning coffee, and Creswick Holiday Park is the fallback if you want powered sites and showers.
